PRINCETON PERMUTATION MURDER MYSTERIES

THEY improv Canada provides Princeton Permutation murder mystery dinners as a way to enhance the interaction and provide for bonding and team building for larger groups of participants with suspects making speeches in front of the audience.

Princeton Permutation Murder Mystery Dinners for Corporate Events, Banquets and Private Parties

THEY improv works with groups of all sizes and discovered a need for quality options that are less expensive and use people from the audience as the suspects in the crime that can serve groups of 100 or more. The Princeton Permutation is the solution to that need.

The Princeton Permutation is designed for groups of 80 or more people, but usually groups of over 100. This custom-built murder mystery party uses up to 10 people from the group as characters in the crime who deliver speeches expressing their dismay at one person. Then our Detective announces that that person has been killed and the people that had given the speeches are the suspects! These people then give another speech professing their innocence and throwing the others under the bus.

mask work

MASK WORK
One of the concepts is that of mask work. The idea is that people are playing characters, rather than themselves.

This frees people up to be less defensive and more open. This allows more of their personality to come out and enhance the bonding.

THE FOCUS IS ON MOTIVE

The most important question is who had the MOST reason to have committed the crime.

The characters go group to group and talk to everyone to find out which one of the suspects had the largest motive to commit the crime.

The team with the most correct information wins small prizes and the glory of winning the evening!

WHO IS THE BEST ACTOR!

Towards the end, we bring the suspects up and ask them for their likely excuse and to answer one question (both of which they had been provided with ahead of time). This is their Oscar award winning moment as they try to win a vote by the audience for the best actor.

FAQ ANSWERS FOR THE PRINCETON PERMUTATION

Yes, it is! But we know for a fact that your people are not professional performers. We know they're going to mess up details. That's why we bring someone who can keep track of what they're saying and change the answer at the end to be what was actually said.

Meaning: If someone messes it up badly, we can still have a winner!

You would be surprised. Strangely, the introverted ones are usually the best at this! It is a thing that we call "Mask Work". The idea is that people get nervous when talking to others because they are worried about sharing too much or putting themselves at risk. They are playing a character. It's not them, it's the character talking. This allows them to be much freer than normal and let loose. it's a relief to not be yourself for a while.

As long as their small, like changing a name or something, not a problem. We usually have written up to 30 characters for these, so we can swap them out easily or change names at will. We kept this a non-automated process. Meaning, we type stuff! Changing a name for you isn't really a problem. Even changing genders of most characters. Some might be more complex, but we'll let you know.

To be clear, we are NOT asking about the gender of the people playing. We are asking about the genders of the characters. We've had men play women and vice versa. We can create non-binary characters and even already have several. It's making people comfortable with who they will play, not who they are.

There are two speeches to be given. One is before the murder is announced, and one is after. For each of these speeches, we provide two versions. One is a bit longer than the other. There is fundamental information on each. Some are just more to the point rather than letting you embellish as much. They get to choose which they want to go with. None of the speeches are longer than one page, and the type is large and spaced well to make it more easily readable.

You would not be happy if we brought cameras into your event. It distracts people and takes away from the game. Besides, we have done this for 8 people and for 200. We've been in restaurants, hotels, houses, on boats, or outside. We have dozens of themes and different mixes of types of people. We'd need 100s of videos. We can try to get you a reference close to what you are looking for, however. Videos, though, are always a problem.

PRINCETON PERMUTATION MURDER MYSTERIES

THE PROCESS

1

AGREE ON THE SCENARIO

While we have pre-set scenarios, there is always a little customization. We go back and forth to settle on the scenario and characters. Once settled, you can share that information with the people who will play those characters. Remember, they have a chance to win as the best actor!

2

PRE-EVENT MEETING

Our host meets with the people playing the characters just beforehand. The host makes them comfortable and provides them with techniques on how to have fun and try to win. This is usually when they ar presented with their speeches, though we can prepare it ahead of time for a bit, but we want to make sure they don't start discussing this ahead of time. The is more of a motivation session to make sure they are comfortable.

3

PERFORMANCE

The host comes in and announces that there are some speeches, with the text involving how they are upset with a character. Upon completion of each first speech, the Host comes in and announces that the vitim has been found dead. Our Host explains that we need to solve the crime and we have a collection of obvious suspects that we should hear from. That cues the second speeches. These characters may go table to table to discuss, they could be stationed around the room, or we could simply solve this more quickly on stage or people submitting answers based on the speeches.

4

SOLUTION

The audience writes down who they think committed the crime and vote for the best actor. The team closest to the truth wins little prizes that we provide. They're good enough for people to want, but small enough that people won't be too upset if they didn't win.

We know for a fact that your people will likely make some mistakes along the way. Our professional host, or hosts, listen and adjust the final answer to what your people said rather than what we wrote. This helps to make certain that your people appear to be the rock stars of the evening! This means that we bring high-quality hosts for your corporate event, fundraiser or private party!

ADD-ONS

We have add-ons that can make your event more effective!

THE PROVIDENCE ADDENDUM

For larger groups, you may want to give the audience a little more of a part. Each person at a table is given a generic character. These are archetypes, like "The Lawyer" or "The Uber Driver" as examples. These characters don't have names and just a generic background. It gives them something fun to play. They each have a couple of pieces of information about the suspects and so have a head start on the mystery. We can provide an additional prize for each table and have them vote at their table for their table's best actor.

THE COLUMBIA COLLABORATION

We can take some members of your audience on a comedic trip through a crime scene and interrogating suspects. There are visual and audio clues and we can either have some people on stage as entertainment, or rotate the entire audience through one team at a time, most likely through a series of sets that we use. Think of it as an escape room where they go room to room until they've solved the crime.

THE DEAD BODY

We can provide an additional actor to play the dead body. this person would come in and die. It will NOT look like a crime scene, but it will provide the opporutnity for individuals or teams to come up and take group photos. That person will later come back and be an assistant to your host.

sleuth

We can run the event quickly with the speeches being enough, or we can give people time to interrogate the suspects to determine the murderer. This can make the event go from 30-90 minutes depending on your desire. Contact THEY improv for more information on how a Princeton Permutation can be the perfect corporate or private murder mystery for your team building, charity or simply entertainment needs.

charity

JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE - For Charity
These are all designed as less expensive alternatives to help reduce our costs. However, there are ways to help raise additional money. If you get sponsors for the event, some might pay to play the characters. They get to get in front of everyone, show their support for your organization or cause, and develop relationships that can prove profitable in the future. Likewise, we can use some of your volunteers to be snitches who sell tips along the way with the proceeds going to your cause.

We are happy to discuss your needs and to see which of our programs is the best fit for your event. Simply call and let us know details and about the personality of the people attending.

These characters are repeated at tables around the room and each character is provided with some specific information about one or two of the suspects that they can share with their team. These characters are non-gender specific and don't have as much detail. For example, they might be doctors, cab drivers, attorneys, psychologists, etc. and their background allows them to know things about the suspects. It is a great way to allow everyone to feel like they are participating while limiting the lack of information should they choose not to play.

CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORMATION

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

1

WHAT IS THE OCCASION?

The first step is to determine your needs. This includes potential goals, desires and concerns. The more we know about what has already been decided can allow us to narrow the conversation to approaches that interest you.

2

WHAT ARE THE DETAILS? WHERE? WHEN? HOW MANY PEOPLE?

We need to know the city where the event will be as well as what kind of venue might be used. A date, or date range, for when you would like to have this and what time frame you are looking for will help to determine our commitment and availability. Knowing the size of your group, though that will likely just be an estimate, will allow us to choose appropriate options and have a better feel for the resources required.

3

DO YOU HAVE A BUDGET IN MIND?

If you know budget limitations, that can allow us to restrict the conversations to those options that will be within your financial constraints. This works in both directions. We don't want to overbuild and propose options that can't be done. Also, we don't want to provide less than we could realizing the resources that could be made available to better achieve your goals.
